Derek Hutchinson 1930-2012

Derek Hutchinson, considered by most as the “Father Of Modern Seakayaking”, has passed away. He was an author, instructor, designer of kayaks and paddles, and the first man to paddle a single kayak the 100 miles across the North Sea.  Derek provided guidance and advice for the formation of North Atlantic Canoe & Kayak, and was listed as an Honorary  Member. A brief piece in Sea Kayaker Magazine pays tribute to his contribution to sea kayaking.  His books and an excellent video featuring Derek done by the University of Sea Kayaking are available from the NACK library. He will be greatly missed by all.

  1. I have all of his books and DVD’s. He was an inspiration to me and hundreds of other “older” men and women who took up paddling In their golden years. He made kayaking look like fun because he had fun doing it. He made it into an art form and I was waiting for his next book or DVD. I will miss him.
