Three of us met over at the Jones Beach kayak launch @Short Beach; &amp; after a little pre-launch discussion decided to do our trip in the opposite direction than was initially planned. This last-minute change gave us a variety of new scenery than the usual, got us to see the seals sooner, and made timing perfect for us to take out at Field 10 for a civilized sit-down picnic table break (instead of eating granola bars &amp; soup in our boats way, way back in the marsh islands.)<\/p>\n<p>So thanks here to backup trip leader Troy for the great suggestion, and even more so for bringing along some clearly detailed NOAA charts printed out on some awesome <em>waterproof copy paper<\/em>. Never knew it was even a thing. (Made my grainy google map printouts in ziplock bags look sad by comparison !) This reverse course also would\u2019ve provided us with the best protection for the paddle home, had any of those 15 mph S. wind gusts <em>forecast for<\/em> early afternoon ever materialized.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3595\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3595\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3595\" src=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-27-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"another day, another boat\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-27-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-27-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-27-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3595\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(&#8220;another day, another boat&#8221;)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As for the rest of the trip, seals were a little standoffish yesterday with a whole herd of them scattering off from their sunbathing activities &amp; into the water about 200 yards away. We could just barely make out their presence in the distance before they bailed out on us (well beyond the 150\u2019 <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dec.ny.gov\/animals\/60840.html\">safe viewing distance<\/a><\/span>\u00a0recommended to not stress them out)<\/p>\n<p>Although the seals were cautious yet curious, the super-calm conditions did let me be comfortable enough to take my non-waterproof digicam out from the dry bag for a better zoom in on these little (250lb) mermaids.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3596\" src=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-6a-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-6a-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-6a-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-6a-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3599\" src=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-8a-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-8a-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-8a-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-8a-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Besides the seals, &amp; the sunny and\u00a0serene\u00a0waters,\u00a0we were also treated\u00a0with favorable currents <em>throughout<\/em>. Four of the five <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/miql5nyz1j7rpar\/trip%20map.jpg?dl=0\">bridge crossings<\/a><\/span> we made were with a nice positive flow helping us along, making for a very enjoyable outing. Even going against the little bit of incoming at the last Wantagh bridge was more fun than burdensome slog.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3597\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3597\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3597\" src=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-4-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"middle Wantagh bridge -plenty of clearance &amp; helpful current !\" width=\"600\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-4-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-4-768x486.jpg 768w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-4-1024x648.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Short-Beach-4.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3597\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">-plenty of clearance here &amp; a helpful current !<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And after our takeout for snacks at Fld.10 (&amp; those warm, year-round bathroom facilities), \u00a0the tide had changed &amp; was once again in our favor for a smooth, easy paddle back to our cars.<\/p>\n<p>Following Lynne out past the Meadowbrook on our last leg back was a lone seal, just checking to be sure these day tripping intruders were really leaving his\u00a0seasonally claimed turf!<\/p>\n<p>The wind never built up, &amp; water at the floating dock that we used for a sand-free takeout actually seemed calmer than our launch, if that was even possible. Was a real good day on the water. And a good day out is better than the best day in a\u00a0pool!<\/p>\n<p>So, don\u2019t let your drysuit get dry-rot.
