Although we all know that you should dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature, the water was mostly near 80\u00b0, the air temperature about 85\u00b0, with a mild southwesterly wind topping out at about 10 MPH.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3471\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3471\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/P6240043.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3471\" src=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/P6240043-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Heading out from Oak Beach \" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/P6240043-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/P6240043-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heading out from Oak Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lynne, Paul, Troy and Bob completed a 13-mile round trip from Oak Beach parking lot, to the island of East Fire Island, and back.<\/p>\n<p>Lynne\u2019s maiden voyage as an ACA Level 3 Trip Leader showed she was ready for the task. Along the the way, she was announcing the island names and markers from her chart as we were passing or approaching, and kept an eye on the weather, conditions and her paddlers.<\/p>\n<p>Paul, who was the Trip Leading Back-up in Training, was assigned to be the navigator, as we were paddling in his \u201cStomping-Grounds,\u201d and it showed. He also was the historian.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped along the way at Sexton Island for a quick snack, and then continued around the north and east sides of West Fire Island, stopping along the southwest side of East Fire Island for lunch.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3473\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3473\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/P6240064.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3473\" src=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/P6240064-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Taking a Break\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/P6240064-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/P6240064-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3473\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taking a Break<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There, Paul found laying in the sand an old friend named \u201cWilson\u201d (remember the volleyball that Tom Hanks had befriended in the movie <em>Cast Away<\/em>)? \u201cWilson\u201d made the voyage back to Oak Beach on the deck of Lynne\u2019s boat.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3474\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3474\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/P6240094.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3474\" src=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/P6240094-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Wilson&quot; on the way home\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/P6240094-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/P6240094-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3474\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Wilson&#8221; on the way home<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the way back, Paul showed us the location of some of the oyster beds and fish trapping areas, both along a section of the bay called Wing Inlet.<\/p>\n<p>Troy, a Licensed Master Boat Captain, who operates a water taxi in the summer right in the area where we were paddling, also offered lots of local knowledge, and made \u201cSECURITE\u201d calls on his VHS radio, advising powerboats to be aware of four kayakers crossing the busy channel and asking them to minimize their wakes.<\/p>\n<p>Bob added some amusement to the end of the trip when we were loading our kayaks back on the car. The animal was returned to the water immediately.
