{"id":2839,"date":"2013-03-20T15:32:06","date_gmt":"2013-03-20T19:32:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/?p=2839"},"modified":"2013-03-20T15:32:07","modified_gmt":"2013-03-20T19:32:07","slug":"new-old-inlet-on-fire-island-in-bellport-bay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/?p=2839","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;New&#8221; Old Inlet on Fire Island in Bellport Bay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Super storm Sandy certainly left it&#8217;s mark on Long Island. \u00a0Perhaps one of the most significant changes was the re-opening of the &#8220;Old Inlet&#8221; area of Fire Island. \u00a0The ocean now flows freely into and out of Bellport Bay with each tide cycle. \u00a0Last fall, a short time after the storm, a couple of NACK kayakers visited the area to get a first hand look at the inlet. \u00a0It&#8217;s just a short \u00a02 mile paddle from the boat launch at Smith Point Park. The force of nature was clearly apparent where the ocean had reclaimed it&#8217;s access to Great South Bay.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2840\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2840\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/new-old-inlet-on-fire-island-in-bellport-bay\/olympus-digital-camera-28\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2840\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2840\" alt=\"Photo: Great South Bay Project Stony Brook University\" src=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Feb_14_2013-1024x766.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Feb_14_2013-1024x766.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Feb_14_2013-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2840\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Great South Bay Project Stony Brook University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The inlet is located about a mile west of the Smith Point Bridge.\u00a0Historically there have been many inlets on the south shore of the island. \u00a0Some have opened and closed by natural processes while others have altered by outside elements. \u00a0While two other breaches of Fire Island in built-up areas were quickly closed this inlet, in the wilderness area of Fire Island National Seashore, remains open.<\/p>\n<p>Controversy surrounds the inlet with many calling for it to be closed to protect South Shore Bay communities from rising tides. \u00a0Scientists at the Stony Brook University&#8217;s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #3366ff;\"><strong><a title=\"Great South Bay Project\" href=\"http:\/\/po.msrc.sunysb.edu\/GSB\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;\">&#8220;The Great South Bay Project&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, who are closely monitoring the bay, have countered these arguments with scientific evidence that this is not the case.
