{"id":2777,"date":"2013-01-30T12:02:31","date_gmt":"2013-01-30T17:02:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/?p=2777"},"modified":"2013-01-30T12:02:31","modified_gmt":"2013-01-30T17:02:31","slug":"artswestchester-exhibit-features-skin-on-frame-kayaks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/?p=2777","title":{"rendered":"ArtsWestchester Exhibit features Skin-on-Frame Kayaks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent article in the <a title=\"NY Times\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/27\/nyregion\/in-white-plains-from-shore-to-shore-an-exhibition-on-boat-building.html?ref=nyregion&amp;_r=1&amp;\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;\">NY Times<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a> has drawn attention to some locally built skin-on-frame (SOF) kayaks as &#8220;art &#8220;. \u00a0Mr. Tom van Buren,\u00a0director of ArtsWestchester\u2019s Folk Arts program,\u00a0is quoted in the article as saying\u00a0\u201cI like to think of boats as floating sculptures.\u201d \u00a0\u201cThe art of it is the mastery of the materials and methods to produce a thing that is functional \u2014 that handles itself safely and gets from point A to point B and delivers its crew and cargo efficiently and comfortably \u2014 but that also is beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Featured are kayaks built by Jack Gilman of the Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club who is also a member of North Atlantic Canoe &amp; Kayak.
