{"id":2284,"date":"2012-04-19T23:51:44","date_gmt":"2012-04-20T03:51:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/?p=2284"},"modified":"2012-04-19T23:51:44","modified_gmt":"2012-04-20T03:51:44","slug":"nack-april-meeting-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/?p=2284","title":{"rendered":"NACK April Meeting Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_2289\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2289\" style=\"width: 394px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/nack-april-meeting-report\/olympus-digital-camera-15\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2289\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2289 \" title=\"Great Horned Owl\" src=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/01a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"394\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/01a.jpg 492w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/01a-300x292.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Great Horned Owl<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>North Atlantic Canoe and Kayak had its monthly meeting featuring wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, on April 17, 2012 at Bellport&#8217;s South Country Library.<\/p>\n<p>Ann started the meeting with a discussion about the benefits of yoga for preparation in Kayaking.\u00a0 Ann, assisted by Steve and Renee\u00b4, demonstrated some basic Yoga positions.\u00a0 Ann demonstrated and explained how much more movement one has for paddling, when their muscles are stretched and relaxed.<\/p>\n<p>The attending members agreed with Ann that it would be good to have a yoga session one night complete with movies and members performing the actual exercises at one of our future meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Following a short discussion of various NACK business matters, the focus of tonight&#8217;s meeting was set to begin.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2304\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2304\" style=\"width: 265px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/nack-april-meeting-report\/olympus-digital-camera-22\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2304\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2304\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/03a4-265x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"265\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/03a4-265x300.jpg 265w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/03a4.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2304\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kerri &amp; Opossum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kerri Dobbs represented the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildliferescuecenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center of the Hamptons<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, by starting out showing us a very informative Power Point presentation, providing lots of information on how we either could or could not assist various wildlife-in-need, which we may come across while we are kayaking.<\/p>\n<p>We all learned many new things, and we&#8217;re all a bit shocked about the &#8220;Old Wife&#8217;s Tale&#8221; about not returning a baby bird which fell out of its nest.\u00a0 The tale says the parent bird will reject the baby because of the humans smell.\u00a0 Kerri explained that the theory was not correct, as birds do not have a sense of smell.<\/p>\n<p>The opossum Kerri is holding was actually rescued from the pouch of its dead mother.\u00a0 If you ever find a dead female opossum, it was suggested to check the pouch for young, and if possible, get the animal to a shelter, as there could be up to 13 babies of the 40 fingernail size births, still alive attached to the mother&#8217;s feeding tubes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2295\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2295\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/nack-april-meeting-report\/olympus-digital-camera-17\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2295\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2295 \" title=\"Red Tail Hawk\" src=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/04a-300x287.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/04a-300x287.jpg 300w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/04a.jpg 351w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2295\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Red Tail Hawk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kerri brought along four animals that the Center had rescued. These animals all had severe injuries, and although are all mainly rehabilitated, none of them could survive in the wild, and can&#8217;t be released.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One simple thing we kayakers can do to save the animals, is to pick up and dispose of potential life threatening traps, such as plastic bags, netting, fish hooks and line.\u00a0 These are all potential accidents waiting to happen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So if you see an injured turtle (be careful of snapping turtles), bird, rabbit, opossum, amongst others call for help.\u00a0 If you find a sea bird entangled in fish line, you, could do as Steve one time did, cover the bird with your shirt, which renders the animal harmless, while you remove and dispose of the fishing line.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2310\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2310\" style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/nack-april-meeting-report\/olympus-digital-camera-24\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2310\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2310\" title=\"Screech Hawk\" src=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/02a-234x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/02a-234x300.jpg 234w, https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/02a.jpg 336w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screech Owl<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"left\">Kerri was kind enough to provide us with a listing of other<a href=\"https:\/\/get-the-nack.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Wildlife-Rescue-Organizations.docx\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> wildlife rescue organizations and rehabilitators<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in the event one of us should discover an animal in need.\u00a0 She stressed that time is of the essence and one should not hesitate to call.\u00a0 While many of these animals may look like they might make good pets this is definitely not the case.\u00a0 They have special needs and will not fare well in captivity.\u00a0 Besides that possession of wildlife is strictly regulated by the Department of Environmental\u00a0 Conservation. \u00a0 Animal rehabilators need special training and are required to be licensed.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">This was a wonderfully educational and enjoyable presentation by Kerri.\u00a0 From beginning to end, this was another great meeting.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Bob H<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>North Atlantic Canoe and Kayak had its monthly meeting featuring wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, on April 17, 2012 at Bellport&#8217;s South Country Library.
