NACK Paddlers Rescue Sailors in Distress
Posted by: | CommentsNACK paddlers Colin Mullen and Dara Fee are featured in the December issue of Sea Kayaker magazine for their recent rescue of two sail boaters in Peconic Bay. Very briefly, while on a paddling trip, they came across two sailors who had apparently gone overboard, without life vests (PFDs). Neither was able to climb back aboard as their sailboat drifted away dragging its anchor. Colin located one of the sailors in serious distress, quite a distance away, by his faint calls for help. Meanwhile Dara chased down the runaway sailboat and the second sailor. Most of the time we hear of boaters coming to the rescue of paddlers so it is especially gratifying to see those roles reversed. All the details are in the December issue of Sea Kayaker.
“Captain Kayak” Jerry Collins receives NACK Distinguished Service Award
Posted by: | CommentsThe Board of Directors of North Atlantic Canoe & Kayak is pleased to announce that they have presented Jerry Collins of Captain Kayak with our Distinguished Service Award. Captain Jerry has served in the past as our vice president and provides our membership with a launch site at the shop on the Browns River in Sayville. He has let us use his kayaks, afforded us member discounts on kayaks and equipment, and provided us with a great meeting place. He also graciously permitted NACK the use of his shop area last spring for our paddle making class. We made quite a mess but had it all cleaned up by the end of the day. Thanks Jerry for your support of NACK and congratulations on your well deserved award.
Mayday Kayak Race Results
Posted by: | CommentsEmpire Kayaks 12th Annual Mayday On The Bay Kayak Race was the perfect way to kick off this year’s kayaking season. Over 60 kayakers enjoyed the sunshine and 80 degree temperature as they paddled around Garrett Marsh in this fun 3 mile race. James Kowalski of Lynbrook was first overall with a time of 24 minutes 13 seconds. NACK Board Member Deborah Horne of Miller Palce was the first woman to cross the finish line paddling a QCC 600x, while Jeff Braucher and Kathleen Lieberman of Long Beach were the fastest double kayakers. Another NACK paddler, Renee Levine, placed third overall in the Womens Class in her Impex Mystic. Four other NACK paddlers turned in some impressive times, but failed to crack the top three in the highly competitive fast 18 foot kayak class. Jim Borstock of Oceanside showed you can never get tired of a good thing by competing in his 12th consecutive Mayday On The Bay Race. Congrats to all participants.
PS The after race refreshments were great. Thanks to Gabrielle, Mike and the whole Empire Crew
