We assembled in Robert Moses Field 5 parking area with Maureen, our trip leader/docent. She had agreed to lead us and provide commentary from her background in oceanography. We proceeded along the beach while she provided interesting perspective on the mineralogy of Long Island beach sand then took the stairs and boardwalk up to the lighthouse.
The view from the top of the Light house is incredible. Here, looking east, we can see the lighthouse grounds with Kismet in the foreground and beyond, the town of Saltaire in the distance.
Looking west we can see Robert Moses State Park with the water tower at the end of Robert Moses Causeway in the distance. In the base of the light is a museum with intersting exhibits on the lore of baymen and life saving stations along Fire Island. Climbing the many steps we can explore the tower.

The same equipment that has been saving ships for many years can still be see at the top of the tower.
Some good excercise, some great views and an interesting education on oceanography and lighthouse lore. A great day a the beach can be had even in December. So lets pack up and head for the diner for a late lunch!
